Stockholm Airport is the main gateway into Sweden, servicing nearly 20 million passengers a year. It sits outside of Stockholm, about 23 miles to the north of the city. There is a high-speed rail service operating between the airport and the city centre, and several bus links run into downtown Stockholm. Taxis are available, but the relatively long distance to the centre of Stockholm means car rental in Stockholm Airport is a great option for travellers.
Who to Book With
Several car rental suppliers are found at the airport including Hertz, Sixt, Avis and Budget. Their central offices are all found within the airport’s Car Rental Office area, with the exception of Sixt. This rental agency is located at the long-term car park at Arlanda Langtid Alfa.
Need to Know Essentials
Tourists need to provide the below documents before renting a car in Stockholm Airport:
- A foreign driver’s licence or an International Driving Permit
- The credit card used for completing the car rental booking
- Passport identification
Driving
Stockholm is a relatively friendly city when it comes to motoring. There is a congestion toll in the centre. This means vehicles driving into the Central Business District between 06:30 and 18:29, Monday to Friday, must pay a fee. Some car rental companies charge drivers for these tolls, but others wave the fees. The roads are in good condition and traffic issues have been reduced since the implementation of the downtown congestion tax in 2006. Tourists need to be careful when driving in the winter as roads can be slippery and dangerous. Parking is difficult to find in the heart of Stockholm as it is restricted, not to mention expensive.

Several train services are found at Stockholm Airport. The Arlanda Express, SL Commuter Trains and Long Distance services are available. Flygbussarna and Swebus are the main bus services operating between downtown Stockholm and the airport. So-called ecotaxis make up most of the cabs provided at the airport. However, there are also plenty of car hire suppliers serving the terminals.
Trains
The Arlanda Express Train departs the airport every 15 minutes and reaches downtown Stockholm in about 20 minutes. Tickets can be purchased from machines and the information counters in the terminals. One-way journeys cost about £24, but children and concession travellers receive discounts on this price. Arlanda Central Station is found beneath the airport’s Sky City and offers regular commuter trains to downtown Stockholm. One-way journeys take about 40 minutes, but tickets are only about £11.
Taxis
Airport Cab and Taxi Solna are among the reliable cab companies operating at the airport. Taxi ranks are found outside each of the terminals. Pricing is deregulated so passengers should take care not to get ripped-off. Prices into downtown Stockholm are higher at night.
Taxi prices:
Stockholm Airport to Central Stockholm is about £45
Buses
Flygbussarna is an airport-operated shuttle bus that travels from all terminals to the heart of Stockholm. During the airport’s peak hours, this shuttle service picks passengers up every 10 minutes. Ticket machines, online tickets and onboard payments can be made. Prices into downtown Stockholm are usually about £9, which is relatively cheap compared to taxis and trains. Swebus is another reliable bus service which provides more than 40 departures daily. Prices for Swebus are similar to those for Fygbussarna services.
Terminals
Stockholm Airport has four convenient terminals. Terminals 2 and 5 handle mostly international flights, including all Star Alliance and SAS international routes. Domestic flights are serviced at Terminal 3 and Terminal 4. Terminal 5, which is housed in the Arlanda North building, is the largest zone at the facility. More than 14 million passengers pass through the international terminals each year, while the domestic terminals stay busy with about five million patrons annually.
Parking
There are more than 10 parking sites and garages located at the airport. It is possible to pre-book parking spots. Some zones, like P25 and P46, are outdoor, open-air car parks. However, there are several multi-storey indoor zones. These zones include the P22 and P21 garages near Terminal 2. All parking sites charge the same hourly rate. Motorists pay £8 per hour. However, the multi-storey car parks cost more, with daily maximum fees of around £30.
Wi-Fi
The terminals at the airport provide wireless internet to passengers. However, internet access is only free for the first three hours. Following this period, the Swedavia Airport internet service is £4 per hour or £12 for a 24-hour period. Payment can be made using a credit or debit card.
Information Services
Information services are found at Terminal 2, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. Here, passengers can speak with airport staff about flights, hotel operators, tour agencies, terminal facilities, check-in details and more. It is possible to call the airport information counters in advance.
