Palma de Mallorca Airport is the gateway to the sun, sea, sand and buzzing nightlife of the ever-popular holiday island of Mallorca. Incredibly busy during the summer high season, it’s set just five miles from Palma town and is connected by local bus, taxi and hotel shuttles. Car rental in Palma de Mallorca Airport is easily arranged, with self-drive the most convenient and most practical way to see all the island has to offer.

Who to Book With
Seven reliable car hire companies are found on the complex, including international companies Avis, Hertz, Europcar and Sixt, and Spanish operators National Atesa and Goldcar. Rental desks are found in the Arrivals areas and, if you’re planning to arrive during the busy high season, advance booking of popular models is highly recommended. Rental cars are stored on the ground floor of the general car park.

Driving
Driving on the right here will present no problems for experienced drivers, although high season traffic in the popular resort areas can result in delays. Roads are generally in good condition, with speed limits of 75mph on motorways, 62mph on major roads, 37mph in urban areas and 25mph in villages. City parking is either metered or roadside, although urban parking places can be hard to find in the high season. Drink driving is taken seriously, with breath tests obligatory and high fines for offenders, seatbelts must be worn by all occupants and petrol stations are plentiful, most with attendants and facilities for card payment.

Transport

The fastest way for arriving passengers to get to their final destination is by self-drive, saving a wait for local buses or the somewhat pricey taxi fare. In good traffic conditions, the journey to Palma takes just 20 minutes or so. Local buses and shuttles are the cheapest means of travel, but can take longer than self-drive due to multiple stops and may not stop at your selected hotel.

Trains
There is no rail link between Palma de Mallorca Airport and Palma town; however, the city has two rail lines: one to Soller and another to Sa Pobla and Manacor. Trains depart from Palma’s Estacio Intermodal at Placa Espanya.

Taxis
The airport’s official taxi rank is located outside the Arrivals exit, with the official, licensed taxis the recommended option. There is a £2.25 surcharge for journeys from the airport, and the minimum weekday fare between 07:00 and 21:00 is £2.50. Price per kilometre is £1.60 and charges increase on weekends, holidays and after 21:00.

Buses
The EMT bus company offers several routes from the airport, with Line 1 running to Palma’s seafront promenade and the town centre from stops outside Departures and Arrivals. Buses run every 15 minutes in season (between May and October), from 05:30 to 02:10, with a reduced service during the off-season months. Tickets, available from the driver, cost around £2. Line 21 runs every half-hour directly to the promenade, stopping at several beachside hotels at the same cost. Shuttle buses for guests are provided by a number of hotels on the island.

Facilities

Terminals
The airport has two terminals, A and B, which are divided into four modules, A, B, C and D. It serves 22 million passengers a year, the majority of whom arrive between May and October. Ryanair, Monarch, Flybe, Jet2 and EasyJet fly from London and a selection of UK regional airports, and Thomas Cook and Thomson operate seasonal and year-round charters. A plethora of low-cost and full-service airlines fly from destinations all over Europe, including Moscow and Helsinki.

Parking
Extensive parking provisions at the airport include over 3,000 short-stay, long-stay, express and VIP parking spaces, as well as a general parking area. Short-term, all-day parking in the multi-storey general car park, just a short walk from the terminals, costs £9.50, with long-term parking at a distance from the terminal complex calculated according to length of stay. The express car park is just outside the Arrivals exit and gives affordable rates, with discounts for advance online booking.

W-iFi internet access is provided in the terminals.

Accessibility
Comprehensive services for disabled passengers are available on request, with meeting points set up and assistance covering check-in, security, shopping and boarding or deplaning. Facilities include wheelchairs, lifts, ramps, reserved seating areas, adapted toilets and washrooms, and reserved bays in all of the airport’s car parks. Passengers with reduced mobility should first contact their airline with a request for assistance.

Restaurants and Bars
The airport boasts a variety of bars, pubs, cafés and eateries across all four of its modules. Module A airside has a Burger King, three snack/coffee shops and two bars, while Module B has a single café. Module C airside hosts several fast food outlets, a coffee shop and bar, and the Warsteiners mini-beer hall, and Module D has a similar layout of fast food outlets and bars. The public zone of the terminals offers a better dining selection, including Henry J Bean’s and Restaurante Son San Joan.

Money and ATMs
Four ATMs are available in Module A and the public terminal area, and a currency exchange facility is located airside in Module A.

Shopping
Duty-free outlets are found in the airside areas of the fourth floor Departures lounge and modules A, C and D, all offering a good choice of gifts, wines, spirits, perfumes and cosmetics. Fashions and accessories are found at the Airport Market on the ground floor of the terminal and in Module B’s airside multi-shop area. The Zone in Module A offers a great choice of designer brand accessories and costume jewellery, and the usual bookstore, newsagent and pharmacy are found in the terminal’s public area.
