Azores is situated 1,460kms from the European coast and 3,750kms from North America in the Atlantic Ocean. This legendary Portuguese island, stuck out in middle of the Atlantic, has its own distinctive charm and experiences mild temperatures throughout the year. The archipelago of the Azores was found by Portuguese explorers at the start of the 15th century. Today it consists of 9 islands, which are divided into three groups: the central (Terceira, Graciosa, the eastern (Sao Miguel and Santa Maria), Sao Jorge, Pico and Faial), and the western (Corvo and Flores). Explore Azores
Visitors to the Azores will be touched by the sapphire blue and emerald green lakes, volcanic craters and cones and its fertile prairies. The scenery on the islands is typified by colourful hydrangeas and azaleas, 15th-century churches, and majestic manor houses.
Many travellers refer to these beautiful mountainous, volcanic islands as 'garden-like pieces of heaven'. Enjoy glorious stretches of beaches, bright exotic flowers, and sunsets to die for. Although the islands are sparsely inhabited, tourists are never alone. In the surrounding waters are large pods of dolphins and whales. This is a fantastic place to spot marine life.
The smallest of all the islands and most peaceful is Corvo Island, with its charming villages with narrow cobble-stoned streets. In Caldeirao, the large volcanic crater, are two beautiful lakes with 9 small islands; each worth exploring by hired boats and offering great snorkeling locations.
On Flores Island, in Santa Cruz, there are fine examples of Baroque churches, such as Sao Boaventura (Baroque) and Nossa Senhora da Conceiptao (19th century) and the Ethnographic Museum. For day trips, there's the Ribeira Grande Waterfall, great for picknicking and getting in touch with nature, or the nearby lakes of Lagoas, where you can explore by boat seven lakes teeming with nature.
Transport
There are flights operated by the regional airline, from Lisbon to Angra, Ponta Delgada and Santa Maria. Car hire is available at these airports but prices are costly so please book online in advance with us and compare the market for cheaper deals. If car hire is not for you there are shuttle services operating from the airports into the islands major towns. Taxis are also available, however, prices are extremely steep if using them for long distances.
Regular boat trips operate between the nine islands, if tourists wish to explore other parts of the Azores Archipelago.
