The metro rail system S-Bahn will take you to the outskirts of Frankfurt and Single, group, day or weekly tickets can be purchased. Keep an eye out for the blue signs with a large U, as these signify the metro stations. The connections leading to the outer areas of the city have green signs with an S. Trains that go out to the outskirts of Frankfurt are checked more frequently by ticket inspectors than trains that connect to the subway, so always ensure that you have a valid ticket before boarding the train.
Tickets must be bought from the machines provided at the stations before boarding a train because there's no option to purchase a ticket on any S-Bahn, tram lines or subways. Using the machine; to buy a single into the city press the button marked Einzelfahrt Frankfurt, or for a day return press the button marked Tageskarte Frankfurt. If you are travelling out to the airport press Einzelfahrt Frankfurt Flughafen or Tageskarte Frankfurt Flughafen. If your journey takes you outside Frankfurt you need to find the location of where you're travelling to on a list provided then enter a code.
From the Hauptbahnhof you can travel to the outskirts via the S-Bahn to visit their many attractions. Alternatively you could use a taxi. Taxis are widely available in Frankfurt and fares are reasonable as the city is not that large. In the main downtown area there are also cycle rickshaws that can carry one or two passengers.
