Boulogne Sur Seine Guide

Guide

Boulogne Sur Seine is located just south of the Bois de Boulogne, which is part of Paris. Skirting the forest and the Seine River, the city has been all but absorbed by the urbanity of the capital, changing drastically the face of what used to be a small town inhabited with mostly butchers.

Tucked into one of the mighty Seine's meanders, the city was not included in the official borders of Paris when Napoleon decided that the natural bend of the Seine was a logical place to change administrative regions.

At the turn of the 19th century, Boulogne Sur Seine saw firsthand the effects of the industrial revolution. The French car company Renault moved into the area and by WWI there were 6,000 Renault employees in Boulogne.

Since then other industries have moved in and the city is one of the most important economic hubs outside of central Paris. The city has a bit of a quieter character than the metropolis just on the other side of the woods, but can still be used to make daytrips in to central Paris.

Driving and parking in central Paris is known to be a frustrating and expensive experience, but by staying at one of the many accommodation options in Boulogne Sur Seine the central area is within easy grasp.

If you're renting a car, Boulogne is easy to navigate, and having a hire car makes it easy to get in and out of the city without relying on the schedules of public transport. It is always advised to prebook a vehicle before you travel.
