London - Waterloo Station Guide

Guide

Waterloo station is famous for being referenced in the lyrics to a Kinks song. The Kinks as a rock band were about as English as you could be, and the song described two young lovers (believed to be Terence Stamp and Julie Christie), meeting at the bridge and admiring the evening's weather and general hubbub.

It has just recently lost the thing it was most famous for in recent years, the Eurostar. Still a major terminus, it has impressive, grand architecture, and sits in one of the most fashionable parts of the city, The South Bank.

When it was first opened it was known as Waterloo Bridge Station'. By 1886 it had become 'Waterloo Station' because this was basically how the locals referred to it.

It has nineteen platforms, and covers a massive 24.5 acres, making it England's largest station. The Victory Arch can be found at the station, and serves as a reminder to passengers of those who gave their lives in the two great wars. Between 1900 and 1922, the station was completely remade.

The station, perhaps due to its size and architecture, has been used a lot as a location for movies and television shows. The impressive four-faced clock in the centre of the main concourse is a famous rendezvous place. In fact the station is a romantic place, perhaps what a visitor to London would expect a London station to be.

Perhaps the best thing about Waterloo is its position on the South Bank. There is the NFT here, the Royal Festival Hall, and The London Eye. Plenty to see and do, in fact and car hire will help you to nip around.
