Explore Leatherhead

To the south of the town is its most significant landmark, the medieval church of St Mary and St Nicholas. Its 15th century tower overlooks the picturesque River Mole and its floodplain, where watercolour landscape painter Joseph Turner got his inspiration from. Inside the church is a beautiful carved chalk chancel arch which dates back to the 12th century. It was reconstructed during the 14th century.

Leatherhead has a number of charming heritage buildings, such as its Medieval timber framed buildings, Georgian houses and Victorian Gothic villas. Visitors should begin their historical tour in Hampton Cottage, which is on Church Street. Here you will come across a timber framed house of the 17th century, home to the Leatherhead Museum of Local History.

Leatherhead has a lovely 14-arch bridge, a selection of galleries, shops, theatres and cafés. A great time to visit Leatherhead is in October, during the annual arts festival. The town centre consists of the pedestrianised High Street, housing many shops and restaurants.

Surrounding the town are attractions to suit all ages. The Surrey Hills offers numerous walks and beautiful scenery, and located within the hills are quaint villages, historic houses and guided walks. Notable parks include Ashstead Park, Norbury Park and Polesden Lacey.

More modern destinations include: Bocketts Farm, where children can experience farm animals first-hand; Chessington World of Adventures, one of the country's leading theme parks; and Denbies Wine Estate, England's largest working winery.

Transport

Leatherhead lies just off the M25 (junction 9) at the gateway to the Surrey Hills and is halfway between Heathrow and Gatwick Airports, with a fast and frequent train service to Central London.
