Located about five miles south of Santa Cruz de la Palma on the stunning east coast of La Palma Island, La Palma Airport is the primary entry point for millions of visitors headed for the sun and sand of the Canary Islands. The airfield is around 25 minutes’ drive from the awe-inspiring volcanic peaks of Cumbre Vieja National Park and about 15 minutes’ drive from the enchanting Plaza Espana in central Santa Cruz. Getting to these sites and the island’s fabulous beach resorts is best done via car hire in La Palma Airport. However, other ground transport options available from the airport include city buses, which operate during limited hours, as well as taxis.

Who to Book With
La Palma Airport passengers can choose from a wide range of vehicles from a number of reputable companies, including international brands Avis, Hertz and Europcar, as well as local firms Cicar and Autos Ancar. Rental desks are situated on the lower level of the terminal, directly outside of the Baggage Reclaim exit doors.

Driving
Spanish driving regulations are similar to UK road rules; seatbelts are compulsory for all passengers, mobile phone use while driving is prohibited and children 12 years of age or younger are not allowed to sit in the front seat. Be aware that the drink drive limit in Spain is just 25mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. Spain drives on the right so British drivers should be extra cautious when leaving petrol stations and car parks as it is a common mistake to turn to the left side of the road. Roads on La Palma can be curvy and steep, particularly on the west side of the island.

Transport

Transport options at La Palma Airport are limited. Arriving passengers will get the greatest freedom to explore and perhaps the best value for money with car hire, although travellers bound for Santa Cruz and popular resorts may find buses a worthwhile choice. Finally, taxis are available around the clock.

Taxis
Passengers can make use of taxi service during all hours; be sure to acquire a taxi from the designated stand outside of the Arrivals area. Prices increase between 22:00 and 06:00, as well as on weekends and holidays. All trips beginning or ending at La Palma Airport entail a supplemental fee of around £1.35.

Buses
Public bus route 500 offers regular service to and from La Palma Airport and Santa Cruz de la Palma, as well as to and from the popular tourist resort of Los Sauces. Service to Santa Cruz is available from 07:00 to 22:00, while services to Los Sauces are available between 07:00 and 00:35; buses depart every half-hour. Facilities

Terminals
La Palma Airport has recently opened a new terminal; the single-building facility located on the east side of the runway on Ctra Aeropuerto. Check-in and Departures are situated on the north side of the ground level, while Baggage Re-claim, passenger pick-up and car hire is located on the south side. Some passenger services, including shopping and dining, can be found on the upper level.

Parking
Parking is available for more than 460 vehicles in the car park below the terminal building. All spaces are within a three-minute walk of the terminal. Parking for less than 60 minutes costs around £0.40, while short-term stays of 60 minutes or more cost about £0.60 per hour. Daily rates are around £6 per day for the first four days and about £5 per day for each day thereafter.

Wi-Fi
La Palma Airport passengers can make use of pay-per-use Wi-Fi access via the Movistar network.

Information Services
There is an airport information counter in the centre of the public area of the lower level of the terminal. Iberia passengers can find a special information desk directly across from the airline’s check-in counters.

Accessibility
La Palma Airport is fully equipped for disabled travellers according to the EU’s 2008 mobility requirements. In addition, there are 23 designated parking spaces for passengers with reduced mobility. Contact the airport for a ‘request for assistance’ form or speak with your airline prior to departure to pre-arrange assistance.

Restaurants and Bars
There are several food and beverage outlets at La Palma Airport: for sandwiches, snacks, coffee and confectionery favourites, head upstairs to the passenger-only zone to Ars. If you’ve got time, look for the adjacent La Pausa or American-themed Henry J Bean’s restaurants for full-service dining. Prior to the security checkpoint, check out Caffriccio on the ground floor for a nice array of light meals, coffee and other beverages.

Money and ATMs
ATMs are available at the airport; however, you’ll need to head into town for a full range of banking services.

Shopping
Passengers can find a good range of gifts and travel accessories at Jerónimo in the public area of the lower level. There is a pharmacy located next door. Departing passengers can head to Hecho en La Palma on the upper level for local goods as well as to Canariensis for a decent assortment of duty-free items (only available to passengers departing the EU).
