Car Hire

Tenerife North Airport, formerly called Los Rodeos Airport, is one of the two airports serving the Canary Islands, Spain. The other airport, Tenerife South, is the busier of the two. That said, Tenerife North is still remarkably busy, with over four million passengers in 2011. This shows the popularity of the Canary Islands as an island destination for many Europeans seeking to escape from the cold winter to the warm, beaches of the Spanish islands. The airport mainly serves the capital of Tenerife Island—Santa Cruz.

Who to Book With
Car rental suppliers can be found on Floor 0 of the airport terminal close the baggage claim of the Arrivals area. The agencies with counters here include Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Cicar and AutoReisen. Intending travellers will benefit from doing an online comparison of rates before they fly. The airport's car park for hire cars is found outside the terminal building across the street.

Driving
While parking can be easy to find, visitors will notice that locals tend to have loose standards when it comes to parking, squeezing cars between two properly parked adjacent cars. Most country roads in Tenerife remain quiet, which gives some drivers the excuse to make like a racing car driver and speed up. Be on the lookout for these. There are still some drivers who use the island's laidback ambience as a loophole to break rules and use a mobile phone while driving. Remember that in Spain, only mobile phones with hands-free sets can be used. While driving on Tenerife, you will come upon the annoyingly slow delivery trucks. It's best to keep your cool as most are considerate enough to allow you to pass them.

Transport

Tenerife has limited public transport. From the airport, only buses and taxis are available. This is why many prefer to self-drive. Many realise that seeing Tenerife's breathtaking landscape behind the wheel of your own vehicle is an experience second to none. To get to the centre of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, located along the coast from the airport, you need only drive along the TF-5. The distance is about nine miles.

Trains
The airport is situated right outside San Cristobal de la Laguna, a historic World Heritage town on Tenerife. La Laguna, as it is called, is connected to Santa Cruz by a tram line about eight miles in length. The tram takes about 40 minutes each way and a ticket costs about £2.

Taxis
Taxis can be found waiting outside the Arrivals area on Floor 0. Note that for services from the airport, a surcharge of £1.4 is applied.

Buses
A few bus routes travel between Tenerife North Airport and the towns and cities in Tenerife. Like the taxi cabs, the buses are found on Floor 0 outside the Arrivals area. Route 102 runs to Santa Cruz and the ride costs a little over £2. Route 343 connects the airport to the south, including Tenerife South Airport. A ticket costs just a little over £8.

Facilities

Terminals
Tenerife North Airport has one terminal building. There are 37 check-in counters and 10 boarding gates. Mostly regional and domestic flights land at the airport, with the bulk of the international arrivals to the Canary Islands arriving at Tenerife South.

Parking
The general car park is found in front of the terminal building, just a couple of minutes' walk. Parking for six hours costs about £1.

Wi-Fi
The airport is not equipped with a Wi-Fi service nor does it have internet access points in the terminal building for public use.

Accessibility
Tenerife North Airport is a barrier-free airport. Facilities have been adapted for the needs of persons with reduced mobility (PRM). In compliance with EU regulations, assistance for PRMs is free of charge. Meeting points for PRMs include the check-in area, both Arrivals and Departures areas, the basement of the car park and of the bus parking.

Restaurants and Bars
A number of restaurants and cafeterias are available for both the public and the passengers at Tenerife North Airport. Cafe Select and Cafeteria Careca can both be found on Floor 0, the former in the Arrivals area, the latter in the Departures area. Bar Tenerife is upstairs on Floor 1 in the Departures area. Snacks and sandwiches can be had at Dorada on Floor 0 in the Departures area.

VIP Lounges
The airport has one VIP Lounge located on the Mezzanine of the Departures area.

Money and ATMs
La Caixa has a branch on Floor 0 in the Arrivals area. ATMs are found in Arrivals and Departures on both Floors 0 and 1.

Shopping
There are six categories of shops in Tenerife North: duty-free, pharmacy, press, gift shop, lottery and general store. Buy-Bye duty-free has two locations in the airport, one on Floor 0 and one on Floor 1, both in the Departures area. The first level of the Arrivals area has the pharmacy (Farmacia) and the press stand (Relay).
