Fuerteventura Airport, also known locally as El Matorral Airport, is located just five miles south of the city of Puerto del Rosario. This airport is one of the major gateways into the Canary Islands. It is located on the island of Fuerteventura, the second largest island of the archipelago. Transportation options on the island are limited to buses, taxis and car hire. The travel time to Puerto del Rosario is less than 20 minutes. Because of the limited public transportation options, self-driving is the most popular way to explore the island.
Who to Book With
The airport offers plenty of car hire options, with the following international firms having car hire desks: Avis, Hertz and Payless. Local car hire companies, such as Cicar and Top Car Auto Reisen, offer services as well. The car hire desks are located right in the terminal building, on the ground floor.
Need to Know Essentials
To hire a car in Spain, drivers need to be at least 21 years of age and will require the following documents:
- Driver’s licence (both parts for UK licence holders or an International Driver’s Licence for non-EU drivers)
- The credit card with which the reservation was made
- Passport to confirm your ID
- Booking number
Driving
Drivers need to beware of specific driving laws in Spain, including always having the following documents on hand: vehicle registration or hire documents, insurance documents, driver’s licence and passport (if driver’s licence has no photograph). Children under the age of three must use a child seat and children under the age of 12 may not sit in the front passenger seat. Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. Carrying two warning triangles and visibility vests in the vehicle is mandatory, and on-the-spot fines are levied by the police for non-compliance. Automatic pumps, especially at night and lunch time hours (12:00 to 15:00), accept credit cards. However, those using UK-issued cards may want to contact their card supplier prior to travel to ensure they can use their card in Spain.
