Located in the northeastern corner of Spain, Girona Costa Airport is located less than eight miles from the city of Girona. The airport is a popular option for those travelling to Barcelona, which is about a one hour bus ride or 57 miles away. Ryanair offers the most flights at this airport. Self-driving is a popular and easy option to explore this part of Spain. Other transportation options from the airport include buses and taxis.

Who to Book With
Travellers can choose from four car hire suppliers at Girona Costa Airport: Europcar, Goldcar Rental, Hertz and National Atesa. All four companies are located on the ground floor of the terminal building.

- For UK drivers, both parts of UK driver’s licence
- For EU drivers, a valid EU driver’s licence
- For non-UK and non-EU drivers, a valid International Driver’s Licence

Driving
Spanish law requires that all drivers keep at hand the following documents: driver’s licence and passport (if no picture is on the driver’s licence), car hire agreement or vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Children under the age of 12 may not sit in the front seat and children under three must use a child seat. All vehicles must have two warning triangles and reflective vests.

Transport

Many passengers choose to hire a vehicle at Girona Costa Airport as self-drive is the most convenient way to get to the city centre as well as to explore the Spanish countryside. Girona is less than an hour’s drive from the French border. Other transportation options from the airport include buses and taxis.

Trains
There is no train station at Girona Costa Airport and the closest train station is in Girona. A taxi to the train station costs around £15 and takes just under 30 minutes. Spanish railway operator Renfe offers services from Girona. The most popular route is to Barcelona, which run about twice every hour and costs £7. The train journey to Barcelona takes about 1 hour, 20 minutes.

Taxis
Taxi services at the airport are on offer from Taxi Girona, whose cars wait right outside the terminal building. Taxis start at £4.50 on weekdays and £5.50 on weekends, holidays and evenings. Taxi fares increase between 22:00 and 08:00. The taxi journey to the city centre takes 20 to 25 minutes.

Buses
There are both public buses and private buses that provide transfers from the airport to various destinations. However, travellers should keep in mind that bus service is severely limited on weekends, especially Sunday. Frogbus provides express bus service from the airport to Girona, Le Boulou and Perpignan. Depending on destination, ticket prices range from £1 to £7. Ryanair also provides bus links between Girona and Barcelona and the airport. Sagales operates bus services to Girona at a cost of around £2.

Facilities

Terminals
Girona Costa Airport has one terminal and services between three and four million passengers a year. The airport is popular among budget airlines, who use it as an alternative to Barcelona Airport. However, most flights are seasonal in nature and provide direct links to various UK airports, Brussels, Amsterdam, Moscow, Kiev and Prague.

Parking
The car park is located just 10 metres from the airport terminal building. The airport has 3,600 spaces for both short- and long-term parking. The airport also has specific motorcycle and bicycle parking. Daily parking is charged at approx. £7, while short-term parking is charged by the hour. Since there are so many parking spaces, there is no need to book ahead.

Wi-Fi
There is currently no wireless internet service at Girona Costa Airport. However, travellers can make use of several computer terminals that are connected to the internet. Charges for computers are about £1 for 10 minutes or £2 for 30 minutes.

Accessibility
Special request can be made for assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. Requests should be made at least 48 hours prior to arrival or through the airline. The airport complies with EU regulations on barrier-free access for disabled passengers. There are also disabled persons’ parking spaces.

Restaurants and Bars
There are restaurants, cafés and fast-food restaurants in both the public and passenger-only areas of the terminal building. In the public area, visitors will find the Caffriccio café, which serves coffee and small snacks, and the Food Gallery, a self-service restaurant. In the passenger-only areas, travellers will find a McDonald’s (hamburgers), Medas (Mediterranean food) and Subway (sandwiches).

There are ATMs throughout the airport, in the Baggage Claim area, the Check-in area and the Arrivals hall.

Shopping
Shopping options at the airport are limited to Divers, Express Shop and Aldeasa. Divers offers a range of electronics and entertainment products, and is located on the first floor of the Departures area. The Express Shop and Aldeasa are duty-free shops located on the first floor of the Boarding area.
