Ringed by spectacularly clean beaches, this island’s flat limestone plain is a beautiful semi-arid environment, featuring fig trees and wild rosemary fields as far as the eye can see. The east of the island is dominated by a 187m high peak; La Mola, and an 86m peak Barberia, in the west. Both make beautiful relaxed climbs, and have wonderful views of the island and the ocean from their summits.
It is the beaches though, that are the prime tourist draw for the island. Offering both nude and clothed areas, this island has both heavily populated and more private beaches. To reach these stunning beaches we highly advise all visitors to book car hire in Formentera, as buses are not always reliable. You may find yourself waiting a long while for one to pass.
Playa de Mitjorn - Located along the south coast, in the narrow part of the island. It has become the principal area for nude sunbathing, and mostly undeveloped, though the Es Copinyars section of the beach has a number of restaurants and bars.
Es Calo - Along the northern coast, the village of Es Calo offers more traditional beaches, some boarding houses and a lovely view of the La Mola lighthouse.
Es Pujols - This beach is served by the village of Sant Ferran and exhibits beautiful pure white sand with a backdrop of dunes and pine trees.
Cala Sahona - This beach can be found along the west coast, lying near to the lighthouse on Barbaria. This cove is the most beautiful on the island and is definitely a must see sight.
Due to the size of this island, it is easily explored by bicycle or car. Though there are few roads, they do reach most areas on this little island. Formentera can only be reached by ferry from Ibiza, taking around 30 minutes. Most tourists arrive at Ibiza Airport, which offers daily flights to a number of European destinations, including; Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia. Madrid has flights to and from cities throughout the world.
Buses operate throughout the island travelling to all major towns from the Port, departing every half hour. They cost between €1 and €2 no matter where you get on or off the bus, but be sure to find out if the bus does stop at your chosen destination as some may not.
