Step into a fairy tale world of castles, princesses, and knights when you visit the province of Castellon, Spain.

Castellon lies on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. The interior is full of green valleys, rushing streams, and high rocky hills, while the coastal area is home to many fine beaches and the capital of the province, Castellon de la Plana. Castellon has over 25 small villages and towns where you can find Gothic churches, castles, and walled medieval towns.

When you step into a walled medieval town, you step back in time. The feeling of walking the narrow streets of a town barely touched for centuries is a feeling everyone should experience at least once in their lives.Benassal, Morella, and Peniscola are the three best towns to share this experience with your family or friends.

Benassal is a 14th century walled town designated a World Heritage Site. Nearby you can visit a cave with prehistoric paintings. Morella is one of the best towns for rural tourism. The imposing sight of the castle built high atop a rock must have intimidated many a warrior. The walled Gothic town of Morella has seen numerous battles due to its strategic location.

Up the coast from Castellon de la Plana is the 13th century walled medieval city of Peniscola. A medieval castle sits on a peninsular rock about 220 feet (67 meters) high, nearly surrounded by the sea. The fortification is joined to the mainland by a narrow strip of land, making it easy to defend.

Remember the movie El Cid? Parts of it were shot at this castle in Peniscola. Tour the castle where the Knights Templar once lived and dined. If you are brave enough, venture into the dungeon where shackles still lie on the cold stone floor.

Castellon de la Plana is a good central place to stay if you are planning to tour the countryside, numerous beaches, and of course, the medieval towns of the province of Castellon. Of all things to take on this holiday, don't forget your imagination.
