Located less than 20 miles from the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, Vila Franca De Xira can be found on the Tagus river's west bank. The municipality has a population of about 133,000 and belongs to the Lisbon District.

The annual bull-running events that occur during July and October have made the town famous, with the Ribatejo's salty marshlands provide the ideal environment for raising the bulls. The breeding of the elegant Lusitano horses also takes place in this area.
