Located in the Lisbon district, about 28 miles from the Portuguese capital, Torres Vedras is a historic town and a perfect destination to enjoy the ambience of the famous and colourful Mardi Gras street festival. The town, with a population of 23,500, also boasts several fascinating attractions.

Visitors shouldn't miss a visit to the impressive São Vicente Fortress. This fort was a silent witness to an important part of history. The fort served as a defense in the Torres Lines, helping to divert a French invasion. The nearby castle is constructed on a hill and was part of the same defensive bastion. The castle's walls enclose the Santa Maria Church.

The old town of Torres Vedras features shops, historic houses and the town's most interesting localities. The imposing 14th century fountain which is known as Chafariz dos Canos is the city's most epitomising landmark. In rua Serpa Pinta you can find the late 17th century Misericordia Church with its wonderful decorated tiles on its walls, while the Church of Saint Peter was reconstructed in the 16th century and is positioned within a short distance as well. While day-tripping, Santa Cruz is a quaint coastal town which deserves a visit.

The Lisbon coast can easily be reached by road. If you want to fully explore this interesting coastal stretch, car hire is essential. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.
