Over 2,000 years of history have built the eclectic city of Lagos. From its Celtic roots, through Roman, Visigoth, and Moorish occupation, each has left an indelible mark upon the city that has survived through the ages. A romantic maze of winding streets and elegant churches, coupled with some of Europe's most spectacular beaches, create the perfect Portuguese holiday destination.

Both Christopher Columbus and Henry the navigator stayed in the illustrious town of Lagos, with its Baroque styled Igreja de Santo Antonio, and St John the Baptist churches. The Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, built in 1444, sports spectacular views over the bay, and the city's Museau Municipal hosts a fabulous array of Roman artwork and weaponry.

No less than nine beaches grace the wide, deep-water bay of Lagos, making it an ideal destination for sun-worshipers and culture-seekers alike. Windsurfing, scuba diving, sailing and golf are some of the region's most popular diversions, as well as daytrips to the north, where the winding road leads through the lush green landscape of Southwest Natural Park.

A gourmand's delight, Lagos is famous for a wide variety of local dishes of fish, almonds, figs and eggs, best accompanied by a glass of the region's muscatel wine. Shopping is abundant, and the city plays host to countless numbers of festivals that take place throughout the year.

The city's old town is best admired on foot, with local buses providing transport around town. To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.
