Port Moresby Guide

Guide

Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, is the main gateway to the natural beauty and untouched wilderness of the rest of the country, attracting a steady stream of adventure-driven tourists. Located on the shores of a deep, beautiful natural harbour on the south coast of the country, the city has numerous attractions for travellers to see and do, which is the reason why car hire is the most favoured form of transportation here.

Explore Port Moresby

The highlights of Port Moresby are its lively markets of Boroko and Gordons (reputedly the largest in the country), where tourists can spend hours being amazed at the variety of goods offered for sale. Many of the animals are sold live, due to the lack of refrigeration in both the markets and in ordinary homes, and range from seafood to birds and even livestock.

Other attractions around the city include Parliament House and the National Museum and Art Gallery, with its excellent exhibits on the country's geography, history, culture, flora and fauna, while out of town, Idler's Beach, Sinasi Reef and Daugo Island boast white, sandy beaches and stunning coral reefs, affording plentiful opportunities for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving.

Quality accommodation and excellent restaurants are located around the harbour area, while Boroko is the center of the nightlife scene, with more quality restaurants, bars, cafes and pubs.

There are many rewarding destinations for day trips from Port Moresby. Northeast are the amazing Rouna Falls and the nearby Varirata National Park, offering tourists magnificent lookouts back to Port Moresby and the coast, while to the north lies Brown River, a picturesque spot for swimming, rafting and picnics. For the more adventurous, the historic Kokoda Trail links the northern and southern coasts and is the most popular walking track in the country.

Transport

Port Moresby International Airport (POM), also referred to as Jacksons International Airport, is served mainly via connections from Australia. However there are direct connections with Singapore, Manila, and Guam. Transportation services from the airport into the city are frequent and reliable. Car hire companies operate from desks in the airport's arrivals hall. Book online in advance to secure a car and so the rental suppliers arrange a car for you to collect on arrival.
