Located just outside the A90 ring road that circumvents Rome is Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, or Rome Airport―the biggest airport in Italy. Less than 22 miles outside the city centre, Rome Airport is a major transportation hub for Italy. Because of its location, right off the A90 motorway, self-driving is an easy option from the airport. Car hire in Rome Airport is not particularly suited for exploring the city centre, with its traffic snarl ups, but rather is ideal for exploring the beautiful Italian countryside and coastal region. Visitors can also use the Leonardo Express train, buses or taxis to get to Rome city centre.

Car hire is a popular transportation choice in Italy. At the airport, travellers can find the following car rental companies: Auto Europe, Avis, Budget, Easycar, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt. Cars are located in a car park which is connected to the terminal building via a walkway.

To hire a car at Rome Airport, travellers will need the following documents:

- UK driver’s licence holders need both parts of their licence
- Non-UK and EU driver’s licence holders must have an International Driving Permit
- Credit card with which the reservation was guaranteed

Driving
All passengers must wear seatbelts at all times. In Italy, vehicles must have their headlights on day or night. All vehicles must carry reflective vests. Drink-driving limits are strictly enforced in Italy. There are both self-service and full-service petrol stations in Italy. Travellers should note that benzina is unleaded petrol and gasolio is diesel. Traffic in Rome can be congested so driving in the city should be avoided.

Transport

There is a wide range of car hire options at the airport and visitors can easily access the city centre via the A90 ring road. The most reliable alternative transportation option is the train to the city centre. Taxis and buses are also convenient options.

Trains
The Leonardo Express train provides non-stop train service from the airport to Rome’s Termini Railway Station, the largest train station in the city. Trenitalia operates the service and trains depart every 30 minutes, with a journey time of 30 minutes. A one-way ticket costs about £12.

Taxis
Visitors will find the official taxi stand right outside the Terminal 3 Arrivals building. Official taxis in Rome are white in colour, have Commune di Roma written on the door and are metered. However, there are fixed rates from the airport to Rome city centre of around £30. Fares to other destinations are not fixed so the meter should be used by the driver. The meter fare should start at around £2.

Buses
The bus stop is located just a short walk from the terminal building, on the ground floor. Terravision operates buses from the airport to Rome’s Termini Railway Station, with a journey time of roughly 55 minutes. Single tickets cost about £5, while returns are around £9. Another bus company that offers connections to Rome is SIT Bus Shuttle. The bus stop for this service is located just outside Terminal 3 and provides links to Roma Termini Railway Station and Piazza Cavour. Single tickets cost about £6.

Facilities

Terminals
The airport has four terminals: 1, 2, 3 and 5. Terminal 5 is the newest terminal and primarily services flights to the US, which require extra security. This is Italy’s largest airport: it handles over 37 million passengers a year. Visitors have easy access to car hire as well as other transportation options, such as trains, buses and taxis.

Parking
The airport offers both short- and long-term parking. There are four car parks, A, B, C and D. The two car parks closest to the airport are A and B; both are for short-term parking. Parking is free for the first 30 minutes, then it is charged at around £3 for every hour thereafter or at around £25 for 24 hours. For parking for over two hours, travellers should choose car parks C or D, which are accessible either via a walkway or by bus from the terminal. Seven days’ parking costs roughly £55. Parking can be booked in advance through the airport’s website.

Wi-Fi
Rome Airport offers wireless internet access to all passengers, with 500 access points. The wireless internet service is on offer from two service providers: Linkem and Boingo. A connection through Boingo costs around £9 per device.

Accessibility
Rome Airport is fully accessible to passengers with reduced mobility. Special assistance can be provided. Travellers who require assistance or the use of a wheelchair should book in advance through their airline. Disabled persons’ parking is available in car park A.

In Terminal 3, there are the following eateries: Rustichelli & Mangione, McDonald’s, Autogrill. In Terminal 5, travellers will find Rustichelli & Mangione.

Shopping
As the largest airport in Italy, Rome Airport offers some of the best airport shopping options. There are many brand name shops, such as Bulgari, Hermes, Swarovski, Nike and Timberland in Terminal 1. In Terminal 3, travellers will find Dixons, Glamour, Sergio Tacchini and Geox. There are also plenty of duty-free options after security check in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.
