The Cattedrale di San Martino, on Piazza San Martino, is an impeccable example of Roman architecture. This gigantic 12th century building could take an entire day to appreciate, with its intricate medieval stone carvings and fine baroque works. On the Piazza Anfiteatro are the remains of a 1st- or 2nd-century Roman amphitheatre.

Take a stroll around town and you'll find many of Lucca's shopping mall's, such as Via Fillungo and Via Santa Lucia. The best wine cellar in town is easily the Enoteca Vanni, so if you enjoy a bit of wine tasting whilst on holiday be sure to visit this place.

Lucca has plenty of great places to eat for all budgets. The Antico Caffè delle Mura, on Piazzale Vittorio Emanuele, offers traditional food in an elegant dining room decorated with a fresco of Lucca’s skyline. In the northwest corner of the city’s walls, on Via Conce 45, is Da Giulio, a very popular trattoria offering reasonably priced food.

With a hire car you can now take full advantage of Lucca's surrounding Garfagnana region. Travel up the Serchio River to enjoy walks through the forests and across stunning mountains. It is such a beautiful area that you must see if you get the time. There are many beautiful churches and medieval Alpine villages along the way, and plenty of wildlife can also be seen.

By air
There’s no airport in Lucca, the closest is Pisa International Airport. The majority of travellers enter the region via this airport or by train/car.

Car hire
Car hire in Lucca can be booked in advance at Pisa Airport, if this is your arrival point. Suppliers are located in the arrival's hall. These include; Auto Europa, Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Liberty Rentals, Locauto, Maggiore, National, Sixt, Advantage, and Goldcar. Prices will vary depending on your choice of vehicle and duration you wish to hire the car for, although if you wish to save money and find cheap car rentals in Lucca, we do advise all of our customers to book online in advance of travel.

By train
If you wish to take a train jump on the Florence-Viareggio train line to Lucca, with 21 trains daily passing through Florence, Pistoia, and Montecatini Terme.

By car
To get to Lucca by road take the A11 which will take you from Florence through Prato, Pistoia, Montecatini, and into Lucca.

By bus
Buses run hourly from Florence, and operate in and around Lucca. They are always considered the cheapest way to travel, but usually unreliable and hot, and crowded on occasions.
