Thassos lies just off the north-eastern coast of mainland Greece, and is the most northerly of the Aegean group of islands. It is an immensely green island, filled with thick pine forests and wooded hills. Fortunately, Thassos has been spared from the commercialized mass tourism that has affected many of the other Greek islands. With its archaeological sites and numerous beaches, it is the ideal holiday destination for the discerning visitor who wants to avoid big crowds.
Skala Potamia is one of the more popular beaches on the island, with its large triangle of white sand. It does not lack in tavernas and bars, and it can get quite busy in the summer months. Paradiso Beach is exceptionally beautiful, with its long stretch of white sand sheltered by high cliffs. If you walk a short distance to the south, you will find a number of dreamlike secluded coves.
Thassos Town has a charming, old fishing harbour filled with restaurants and cafes. Above the town, you will find an old Roman amphitheatre where performances are held in the summer. Nearby, there are the well-preserved city walls as well as the ruins of the Acropolis and its Temples of Apollo and Athena. There are also a number of old churches and monasteries that you can visit. The most visited one is probably the Monastery of Vatopediou, which is considered to be the symbol of Thassos Town.
It is recommended that you rent a car if you want to explore some of the scenic hillside villages on the eastern coast of the island. The closest airport to Thassos is the International Airport of Kavala, near the town of Keramoti on the mainland. From Keramoti, there are daily ferryboats that bring you directly into Thassos Town.
