This popular Aegean island varies from being a young bar-hopper’s paradise to a sophisticated cultural center, depending on what time of year you visit. During the peak season of July and August the city is saturated by student travellers looking for a good time and during the off-season it is quieter and has more cultural events. It is also particularly popular with the gay community.
Explore Mykonos
The larger of the two towns on the island is Hora. In season this town is wild with young people going from bar to bar. But during the day, those more interested in culture visit the Archaeological Museum or one of the many art galleries and workshops which populate the back streets of the town. During the winter the city also hosts a small film festival.
The other town on Mykonos is Ano Mera. More traditional then Hora and only 7 kms away, this town has several sites of historical interest. One is the Monastery of Panayia Tourliani, which has a beautiful marble bell tower with intricate carvings. Alternatively the 12th century monastery of Paleokastro, is a peaceful place to sit and contemplate life in the Aegean.
Most people come to Mykonos for its sunshine and fantastic beaches, and the island is most known for its leisure activities. Apart from all of the bars and tavernas in Hora, the island is dotted with excellent swimming beaches. This is also one of the only islands in the Aegean that allows scuba diving, and courses can be had from several schools in Hora.
If you choose to explore the island by car you can reach the north coast which is quieter and less developed - still largely undiscovered by the crowds of tourists.
