Marathokampos Guide

Guide

The Greek island of Samos lies in the north-eastern part of the Aegean Sea. It is an exceptionally green and fertile island, renowned for its many vineyards, excellent wine, beautiful beaches, hilly landscape, and rich cultural past. Kampos Marathokampou is located along the southwest coast and offers beautiful scenery, and is an ideal holiday destination for anyone looking to combine beach fun with a bit of historical exploration, ideal for exploring by car. Book car hire in Samos with us today.

Explore Samos Island

The birthplace to the ancient philosopher and mathematician Pythagorus, Samos Island is home to several remarkable ancient structures. Among them is the famous Tunnel of Eupalinus, which is considered to be one of the eight wonders of the ancient world. You will also find the magnificent Temple of Hera here. Dating back to the 7th century, this was probably the most important sanctuary dedicated to the Goddess of fertility and childbirth in its era.

The many beaches of Samos provide the perfect backdrop for windsurfers. Lemonakia Beach, with its stunning, clear-blue waters, is located in the village of Kokkari in the north side of the island. The glorious beaches of Micro Seitani and Megalo Seitani can only be reached by foot or boat, but their charm is most certainly worth the journey.

Because Samos is relatively big, hiring a car to explore the island is recommended. Road conditions are good and there are several interesting trips you can make. Along the road heading south from Vathi is the village of Pithagorio, where the Castle of Lycourgos Logothetis is located. It is a splendid 19th-century structure which exhibits two Roman galleries and the remains of churches from the late Christian period. If you drive 3 km west of Karlovassi village, you will uncover the enchanting area of Potami and its incredible waterfalls.

Transport

The island's only airport is Samos International Airport with flights arriving from Rhodes or Athens Airports. Car hire is also available here so if you arrive in Samos at this airport, rather than by ferry, then please be sure to book car hire at Samos Airport in advance of travel. Book car rentals in Samos online today with us and we'll find you the cheapest deals across the market from leading firms Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty and Sixt.

The island's bus system KTEL operates to all major towns and resorts on the island, as well to and from the airport. Prices are cheap, although destinations are limited compared to if you decide to book a hire car, which you can then travel the coast as you please.
