Sat in the middle of beautiful Lake Voulismeni and the sea, Agios Nikolaos attracts both relaxed and active tourists. There are cafe's by the lake and beaches for those who would like to relax on their holiday, or if you are the type of person who enjoys an adventure, there are many activities like windsurfing, swimming, and parasailing on offer.

Small tour boats run daily trips out of the harbour and along the coast to Elouda, to see the nearby Venetian fortress of Spinaloga. The people of Agios Nikolaos organize annual music, dance and cultural events, with theatrical performances, shows and some interesting exhibitions throughout the summer. Also, during Naval week, windsurfing, waterskiing, and swimming contests are organized.

In the centre of Agios Nikolaos is Lake Voulismeni, and surrounding it, along its quiet, calm shores are numerous cafes, quaint tavernas, and restaurants. There are even sandy beaches along its shores for you to sunbathe or enjoy a quick dip in the lake. If its a nice day you must hire a paddleboat and peddal around the harbour and lake, which are connected by a canal.

Opt for car hire in Agios Nikoloas and head west inland to the area of Lasithi Plateau (Oropedio Lasithiou). Driving throughout this mountainous region will be the highlight of your trip. Here you will come across vast apple and pear orchards, almond plantations, old-style windmills in their thousands, and Dikteon Cave, the mythological hiding place of the infant Zeus.

Transport

By air
Heraklion is the nearest international airport to Agios Nikolaos, located only a short 52 minute car ride. It is also referred to as Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, and is the second largest airport in Greece.

Car rental companies with desks in the airport's arrivals area are; Eurodollar, Avis, Autohellas, and Travel Star. We highly advise you to book car hire at Heraklion Airport in advance of travel in order to secure a car, and at a cheaper price. The airport does offer a selection of cars, however, they are limited and so just to be safe prebook your rental car.

By car
Agios Nikolaos is easily reachable by car. If you are arriving at Heraklion Airport or Port and have a rental car then you will need to head west, merging onto the E75, and then drive all the way to Agios Nikolaos.

By bus
Frequent buses service the area and offer cheap connections to and from Heraklion and Sitia, which also have airports and ports.

By boat
There are a number of ferries operating to Heraklion Port from the mainland. Sitia also has a port and is an hours drive away.
