Emden Guide

Emden is a sea port in German river Ems. It is situated in lower Saxony, Germany. The city serves as a major hub for oil refineries. The city also has the famed auto maker Volkswagen building the VW Passcat car. Also there are companies that specialize in manufacturing the U-Boats.

There is no evidence showing the exact founding date of the city but experts believe it to be well before the 8th century. During napoleon reign the city was a part of Holland kingdom for a short period of time. The shipyard North Sea Works which was found in 1903 is still active in building ships.

The town has a small airfield which is mainly used by companies in and around the city. The city is connected by federal highways as well as autobahns. There are also daily rail connections to most major towns nearby.

The city is located at the mouth of Ems River facing the North Sea. The city has a population of over 51000 spread over an area of 113 square km. Also in the south of the city is the Dollard Bay.

The city ensures that there are a number of buses that connect most parts of the city. There is also a good taxi service in the city which will help you in getting around this port city.

The great church, kunsthalle, the new church, Otto-huus, the town hall and the Port are some of the major attractions in the city which specify the city's past.

The city office offers guided tours so that you can understand the city much better and costs just over 2 Euros per head on group tours.

The city has a cold winters with temperatures going below freezing point with January being the coldest month of the year and july is one of the hottest months of the year with temperatures rising to 18 Celsius.

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.
