Saumur is a beautiful, historic city in the Loire region of central northeast France. The city is famous for its picturesque, fairytale castle perched on a hill overlooking the city. The settlement has been known as Saumur since before the turn of the first millennium, and subsequently grew to become the centre of religion, military, administration, agriculture and commercial concerns.

Visitors can reach Saumur easily by train, and the Saumur Rail Station (Gare de Saumer) lies one kilometre from the city centre. The station was built in 1979 and serves high speed TGV trains from France's major cities as well as TER trains that connect with Tours, Angers and Grenoble.

The city offers many attractive historical buildings, starting with the impressive Chateau de Saumur. There are also many standout churches and cathedrals to rival the Hotel de Ville in style and grandeur, clear evidence of the city's past as a significant religious centre.
