Clermont Station Guide

One of France's oldest cities, Clermont Ferrand is well known for the extinct volcanoes that surround the city. Clermont Ferrand is situated around the midpoint of the Paris-Nimes rail line, making it an ideal stopping point in the Auvergne region. Paris and Nimes are both major TGV hubs, providing high-speed access to northern and southern France.

Puy de Dme is the highest of the dormant volcanoes in the region, located about eight miles from the city centre. Hiking and parasailing are offered at the top of this volcano. This city is the result of a unification of Clermont and Montferrand, though two separate downtown areas persist. The renowned French tire company Michelin is based here.

The main square of Clermont Ferrand is the Place de Jaude, with its large statue of Vercingetorix. The Fontaine d'Amboise, built in the 16th century, is another lovely monument. The construction of the Cathdrale Notre Dame de l'Assomption spanned over several centuries, beginning in the 13th century and finally reaching completion in 1902. Made of black volcanic rock, it is one of the city's most impressive sights. The 11th century Romanesque Notre Dame du Port has some intricate decor on display and was built from yellow sandstone.

The surrounding Auvergne region has beautiful landscapes and a great selection of outdoor activities. To take advantage of these, hire a car at the Clermont Ferrand Rail Station and sightsee at your own pace. Car rental is a convenient option for the independent traveller looking to explore the region and can be booked online in just minutes.
