At just over 17 miles from downtown Paris, the commune of Pontoise in the city's northwestern suburbs is reached in less than 30 minutes by hire car. The name of this small town is an amalgamation of the French word pont, meaning 'bridge,' and the title of the nearby River Oise.

Art buffs will be interested to know that Pontoise has strong connections with the impressionist movement, having been home to Camille Pissaro for 17 years and a temporary place of residence for the likes of Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, Gustave Caillebotte, Charles-Francois Daubigny and others. Some of the most famous landscape paintings by these artists are based on location in the surrounds of Pontoise.

Sightseeing attractions include the splendid Cathedrale Saint-Maclou de Pontoise, a building constructed in the 12th century and added to in the 15th and 16th centuries. The cathedral illustrates a mix of Renaissance and other architectural styles.

Also worth visiting is the Musee de Pontoise, a museum that displays a varied collection of artefacts including 20th century paintings, 17th century manuscripts and Middle-Age sculptures. More examples of artwork can be seen at the Musee Pissarro, a facility housing a variety of impressionist pieces.

Pontoise can be reached by train easily from Paris along RER line C with the journey taking under 30 minutes. Visitors renting cars will find the route from the city centre is quick and easy.
