Historically known for its important shipbuilding trade, La Seyne Sur Mer is a sizeable town in the Provence-Alps-Cte d'Azur region of France. The town is an industrial suburb of Toulon, but boasts its own beautiful coastline on the Mediterranean as well.

The Socit des Forges et Chantiers de la Mediterrane runs one of Europe's best shipbuilding yards here, employing around 3,000 workers. The Toulon harbour is surrounded by several fortifications to secure its strategic position, including Fort Balaguier and Fort Napoleon.

La Seyne Sur Mer is blessed with over 12 miles (20kms) of coastline, with such beautiful beaches as Les Sablettes, Mar Vivo and La Verne, among many others. These beaches, particularly Les Sablettes, are often host to a number of exciting events, including canoeing and swimming races, a fishermen's festival, a summer craft market and regattas. On the last Sunday of the year, there is an annual December swim to pay respects to Neptune.

Travellers should jump in their rental car and visit the Chteau du Manteau, a castle nestled on the grounds of fantastic gardens. The Notre Dame de Bon Voyage church is another worthwhile stop.

Nearby Toulon also merits a visit as France's major Mediterranean naval centre. Besides its significance in the area of naval construction, this thriving city is also known for its fishing, wine production, tobacco, printing and shoes.
