La Ciotat Guide

La Ciotat is a city located in the southeastern French département of Bouches-du-Rhône. It is also part of the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. La Ciotat is located at an equal distance between Toulon and Marseilles. It is also one of the components of the Marseilles Provence. La Ciotat has a land area of about 30 square kilometers and a population of about 35000.

In Catalan, the city is called as La Ciutat, which means the city. The city became known in the 1400's. This city is venue for the first animated film showing, which was made by the Lumi?re brothers. It was in 1895 when the brothers had the public screening of a projected motion picture. This motion picture is a train approaching the La Ciotat station. The film showing was held at L'Eden, the oldest and the first cinema in the world, which is located in La Ciotat.

The game of Pétanque was invented in the early 1900's by Jules Le Noir in La Ciotat. The Musée Ciotaden has more information on the history and the development of the game in La Ciotat.

La Ciotat has several public parks where tourists can relax as they view local and some exotic plant species. Some parks worth visiting are the Jardin De La Ville and the Parc Naturel Du Mugel.
