Issoire Guide

Located in central France, along the south east of Clermont-Ferrand, is the commune of Issoire in the department of Puy-de-Dme. It has a land area of less than 20 square kms and a population of less than 15,000. It is also one of the 9 cantons of the arrondissement of Issoire and one of the 116 communes of the arrondissement. It is near the beautiful Couze River which offers scenic walks along it's banks. Further down the river is the convergence zone where the river meets the Allier River.

Issoire is also regarded as one of the few fertile plains in the country, on the basins of the Allier River which has been named as the Petites Limagnes.

During the Roman times Issoire was a popular area because of it's any schools. Because of the great Roman influence on the town, a traveller will not miss the Romanesque architecture in the buildings and structures. This can be seen in the Church of Saint Austremoine (Stremonius), which was built on the site of an old chapel, above the tomb of Saint Austremoine.

To reach the commune of Issoire take the train on the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranee railway to Nimes. Aulnat Airport is the nearest airport to Issoire with Air France and Flybe operating flights to and from this airport.
