Gap is a French commune which lies 2,406 feet above sea level on the right embankment of the river Luye. It is the biggest town in the Southern Alps and the capital of the Upper-Alps department, making it a popular tourist spot.

Originally created by the Gauls, the Romans, under Emperor Augustus, took control of the town in 14 BC. In 1512, Gap was seized by the French crown, and in 1815, Napoleon I arrived here from Elba and had innumerable copies of his proclamations printed. When he left Gap, the entire population of the town escorted him.

Gap is an ideal starting point for discovering Les Ecrins National Park, which features high summits, glaciers and Alpine fauna and flora. This region offers a wide range of leisure activities such as cross-country skiing, climbing, cycling, walking, paragliding and golf to name but a few.

Every Wednesday and Friday, a lively market is held in the town where visitors are able to taste traditional Alpine cuisine including Champsaur pies and raviolis de Gap, a mouth-watering creamy potato gratin.
