Etampes

Situated in central France, just 30 miles from Paris, Etampes rests on the banks of the Chalouette River. With a long history and plenty of medieval art and architecture on display, Etampes is a charming place to rest inbetween daytrips to the nation's capital.

Etampes is considered a satellite city of Paris. Founded in the 7th century, this town played host to a number of church summits and councils during the Middle Ages. Much of the town's more ancient infrastructure was damaged or destroyed during a series of 17th century conflicts.

Notre-Dame du Fort is both the principle church and an important tourist attraction in Etampes. Built in the 11th century, this church boasts a Romanesque spire and a well-preserved tower. Another fine religious structure, the Church of St Basile, was built in the 12th century and refurbished in the 1500s.

Excellent panoramic views of the city are available from the Tour Guinette, a ruined fortress constructed sometime in the early 11th century. The castle keep is the most substantial remaining structure. This holdover was spared when the rest of the castle was destroyed during the Hundred Years War.

Transport to and from Etampes revolves around Paris, where all major connecting flights land. The RER rapid transit system (line C) connects Paris to Etampes via one of two stations: St Martin d'Etampes and Etampes. Hiring a car is also a convenient means of getting around.
