The unbelievable beauty of nature is what many people come to the Faroe Islands for. Countless windswept islands, precipitous seaside cliffs, the deep blue ocean, the verdant valleys and the fresh clean air are the strong selling points for the islands' tourism. To get here, you can fly to the only airport in the Faroe Islands—Vagar Airport. From here, you can drive to the capital Tórshavn and begin exploring the remote picturesque areas and small fishing villages with your car rental.

Who to Book With
Three car hire suppliers are present in the small airport at Vágar. Upon arrival, you can head to the desks of Unicar, Avis and Hertz. There are a couple more car rental companies with offices in Tórshavn: Rentacar and BVK. You can also choose to pick up you rented vehicle here. It is best to compare rates for rental vehicles before you travel.

Driving
The Faroe Islands is a self-governing archipelago, but it is a territory of Denmark. Generally, Danish rules of the road apply here. Drivers will be glad to know that the main islands in the Faroese archipelago are connected by a series of tunnels, causeways and vehicle ferries. Thus, getting around will be easy. When driving to a port to use a vehicle ferry, make sure to arrive at least 20 minutes before. Driving is a popular way of getting around here and you need to reserve a place in the ferry to make your journey run smoothly. Parking rules in the main cities of Tórshavn, Runavík and Klaksvík is strict. Your vehicle needs to have a parking disc, which you can acquire at any bank or tourist office. Transport

You can pick up the vehicle you rented at the airport and drive to the rest of the Faroes from here. Otherwise, taxis and airport shuttles will be waiting at the Arrivals area. The airport is 25 miles from the capital and the commute should take about 40 minutes. Several buses depart during the day. These not only go to Tórshavn but also stop in other towns along the way. There are no railway lines here. Taxis are also available.

Taxis
There are currently two taxi service providers operating in Vagar Airport, both of which you can call to arrange for onward transport. The taxi service providers are Taxi Bil and Auto Taxi. Not only do these companies provide transport to Tórshavn, they can also take you to other parts of the Faroe Islands reachable by overland transport. Ideally, reservations should be made at least four hours in advance.

Buses
Several buses and shuttles depart from Vagar. Around 10 buses operate from morning until the evening. More or less, bus departures are aligned with flight arrivals. A ride to Tórshavn costs around £12. Taxi Bil also operates shuttle buses from the airport but prior arrangement is necessary. The service to Tórshavn costs £19 per person.

Facilities

Terminals
Vagar Airport only has one terminal located in the southwest part of Vagar Island. The Faroes being a remote destination, only around 180,000 passengers arrive at Vagar yearly. Atlantic Airways have regular flights to Denmark and Iceland. In summer, the company also operates flights from the UK (London-Gatwick), Spain and Italy.

Parking
Short-term and long-term parking are available at the airport's parking lot. Parking is free for the first hour and about £2 per hour after that. Ticket machines are available for easy payment.

Wi-Fi
The airport does not have Wi-Fi or internet facilities for passengers and the public.

Information Services
The terminal of Vagar Airport is a small one, so it will not be difficult to find airport administration staff who will be willing to lend a hand. Otherwise, you can call the airport's information number.

Accessibility
The terminal's toilet is able to accommodate handicapped passengers. Should there be a need for one, a wheelchair is also available. Persons with reduced mobility are advised to arrive at the airport well ahead of time so that airline and airport staff can accommodate their needs.

Restaurants and Bars
One establishment serves foods at the small terminal building of Vagar Airport. Kafé Vagar has coffee, wine, sandwiches, pizzas, salads and many other offerings.

VIP Lounges
There are no VIP Lounges at Vagar Airport.

Money and ATMs
The airport does not have an ATM, bank branch or a money exchange facility. The closest one is Eik Banki, which has ATMs in Tórshavn.

Shopping
As far as shopping is concerned, only food is available in Kafé Vagar.
