Esbjerg is a beautiful coastal town in the county of South Jutland, located 200kms west of the city of Copenhagen. With natural gas and oil deposits in the North Sea, it is now referred to as Denmark’s oil city, and because of its accessibility to the sea it has a large fishing port. The town’s many parks, woods and historical buildings all have a lot of appeal. Although the town is relatively new, it still has many attractions for the sight- seeing public. In town, on Borgergade, is Bogtryk Museum. This is the largest presswork museum located in Denmark and still working today. It has a complete collection of printed works and presses which can be traced back to over half a century ago.
Esbjerg is great for shopping with such a large range of traditional Danish handcrafts and clothing shops. Torvetgade, with a string of inviting restaurants and art cafes, should be your first stop. Almost 200 specialty shops can be found at the Kongensgade shopping centre.
The magnificent Musikhuset Esbjerg, on Havnegade, Is host to Esbjerg’s opera and ballet. Designed by Jørn and Jan Utzon (Jørn was the world-famous architect of the Sydney Opera House), It’s a delight just to look at the enormous white edifice. Concerts can also be seen throughout the year here.
Out of town, seven miles north of Esbjerg, between Ho Bay and the Varde river, stretches the picturesque Marbæk area. Now a nature reserve, it is home to an array of fauna and wildlife. There are also many scenic lakes and ponds dotted around its labyrinthine trails.
