Sozopol is located in Bulgaria, approximately 34 km south of Bourgas. Sozopol is most popular for its beach resorts. Many travelers take public busses from Bourgas to Sozopol, however, you can also get a vehicle from one of the car hire agencies in Bourgas as well. Once you reach the town, you turn right to go to the new town or turn left to go to the old town. It should be noted, however, that the access by car in the old town is limited.
Sozopol is one of the oldest coastal towns in Bulgaria. It was founded in 610 BC by Miletian Greeks. Among some of the cultural monuments are 45, 19th century stone and wood houses. Apart from tourism, Sozopol is a fishing village. You can watch the fisherman unload their catches of the day and sell them to local restaurants at the small harbor.
There are several places to visit in Sozopol. There are two ancient churches, St. Zosim Church and the Holy Virgin Church. These churches were built in the renaissance period and are a must see. There are several fjord-like formations along the coast to the south. There are also a number of interesting caves shaped by the incoming coastal waves. A further 20 km south is the mouth of the Ropotamo River, which has been declared a natural reserve.
There are several private lodgings and camping sites at and around Sozopol, in both the new and old town. As can be expected, the accommodation rates in Sozopol are more expensive than in the surrounding areas.
