Still, the most convenient way to access the city and its surrounding area is with car hire in Miami Airport, with Downtown Miami a 15-minute drive to the east.
Who to Book With
There are a number of well-known car rental suppliers at the airport, including Thrifty, Budget, Enterprise, Budget and Hertz. All firms have offices at the MIA Rental Car Center (RCC), which is accessible via the MIA Mover train. Vehicles are collected from this centre, with 6,500 to choose from.
Need to Know Essentials
You will need to show the following documents at vehicle collection:
- Your driver’s licence (both parts for UK drivers)
- The credit card that was used to make the booking
- A passport to confirm your identity
- Confirmation of booking
Driving
Parking restrictions vary by state, but expect fines and towing if you park in a prohibited area. Watch the colours on the curbs, with red, white and yellow being no parking zones, while green allows motorists to park for up to 30 minutes. Automatic petrol stations are commonplace though there are some serviced stations. Most stations accept credit and debit cards for payment though UK-drivers should carry cash in case their UK-issued card is not accepted. Car rental companies supply drivers with RFID transponders to be used on turnpikes though some toll routes accept payment in cash.
See our guide to the US for more information on driving here.
