A visit to Istanbul is never complete without a journey up the Bosphorus, a strait which separates Europe and Asia. Aside from the only physical boundary between these two continents, the shores of the Bosphorus offer a mixture of past and present, or the grand and simple. Modern hotels, marble palaces, stone fortresses and small fishing villages can be seen on Istanbul Asian side. To see more of the area, one can embark at Eminn on one of the passenger boats. A boat excursion can take up to six hours and are reasonably priced. There are also some boats which offer private cruises and night mini cruises but you will need to arrange this with a travel agency before coming to Turkey.
Just past the bridge on the Asian side, you will see the Beylerbeyi Palace, built in 1861 by Sultan Abdlaziz to accommodate foreign heads of states who are visiting the Ottoman Empire. Behind the palace one will see the Camlica Hill, considered as the highest point of Istanbul. If you wish to enjoy the magnificent panorama, and the landscaped gardens, you can car hire from providers like Argus, Avis and CarHire 3000 so you can drive around the area.
On the opposite shore you will see the wooden Arnavutkoy and the luxurious modern apartments in Bebek. Traveling a few kilometers more will bring you to the Rumeli Hisari and Andolu Hisari, two fortresses facing each other like sentries guarding the city. The Goksu Palace, also known as Kucuksu Palace, stand next to the Anadolu Hisari on the Istanbul Asian side.
