The largest city of Suriname is Paramaribo. This capital sits on the Suriname River banks in the area of Paramaribo. Since 2002 the ancient city centre of Paramaribo has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Car hire in Paramaribo offers a way to visit the capital city and its surroundings.

The historic city area was once used as a trading post by the Dutch. The English then took it in 1630, until it became an English colony capital in 1650. From here the English and the Dutch often changed control until it stayed in Dutch hands from 1815 until Suriname's independence in 1975.

There is a diverse mix of ethnicity here. Citizens tend to have African, Dutch, Asian Indian or indigenous descent. Other ethnicities include East Indians, Chinese, Hindustani, Creoles, Javanese, Native Americans, Maroons and Europeans of mainly English or Dutch descent.
