As part of Mpumalanga Province in South Africa, Middelburg is an important depot for tourists who plan on visiting the Escarpment and other natural sites. A major artery in and out of Middelburg is the railway. The main terminal is in the city centre near the intersection of Meyer and Cowen Ntuli streets. Just head one block south of the intersection to the roundabout in where passengers connect with trains bound for Johannesburg and other major South African cities.

Car rental in Middelburg also makes it easy to get to and from the international gateway, which is about 90 miles west via the N12. The airport is busy in all seasons, but numbers peak from December to January during the South African summer. Driving time to Middelburg is 1 hour, 30 minutes.
