Overlooking Papua New Guinea's Huon Gulf, the city of Lae is the island's second largest with a population of 120,000. Found in the province of Morobe, it is viewed by many as a centre of industry for the country. This gold rush town was established in the inter-war years. Soon after a cargo port was created that is the island's largest today.

The city found global fame in July 1937 when aviatrix Amelia Earhart flew from Nadzab airstrip on what was to be her last flight. She was never heard of again. While she may be gone, the people of this friendly city have not forgotten her as there is a memorial to her in the city centre worth seeing during your trip.

Lae makes an ideal base for travel while exploring Papua New Guinea.
