Kawerau Guide

Kawerau Downtown is a charming little town situated in the region of Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Located within driving distance of larger towns such as Tauranga and Rotorua, you can easily get here by car hire while enjoying the picturesque countryside. It is interesting to note that with Mount Edgecumbe situated just 3 kilometers east of Kawerau Downtown, and was the cause of the Edgecumbe earthquake that terrorized the town during March 1987, Kawerau Downtown survived the catastrophe and till this day, remains a great tourist attraction. Other interesting geographical trivia about Kawerau Downtown includes the fact that their water was deemed the best-tasting in the whole of New Zealand for two consecutive years in 2003 and 2004.

One of the attractive tourist spots worth visiting in Kawerau Downtown is the heated 30 meter swimming pool located next to Prideaux Park. This is the only public pool in New Zealand where admission is free. An outdoor recreational area is provided where barbecues and picnics can take place. Besides swimming in the smaller pools, children can also play in the delightfully build playground.

If swimming is not your cup of tea, you can opt to take a tour of Tarawera Falls. This breath-taking waterfall is just a short drive through the forest from Tarawera Lake. Interestingly, the scenic reserve of Tarawera was formed during the devastating volcanic eruption in 1886. The lake surface was elevated by 12 meters and thus, the Tarawera landscape as we know it was conceived. You can also take a hike through the Whirinaki forest to explore the wonderfully preserved flora and fauna, and if you crave for a sip of one of New Zealand's finest organic wines, you can extend your sojourn to the nearby Covell Estate Wines.

Intrigued and curious about Kawerau Downtown? You can get there by car hire from Tauranga, the largest city in Bay of Plenty, and Rotorua, but do make sure you obtain reliable car hire as you might want plan for an extended exploration of the arrestingly beautiful Kawerau Downtown.
