Guide to Sacramento

Sacramento

California's capital and oldest incorporated city is Sacramento, first founded during the California Gold Rush in 1849. Nowadays, Sacramento's main attractions are its Mediterranean climate and relaxed pace. The city can easily be explored aboard a 19th century Spirit of Sacramento riverboat cruise, a 40-minute journey aboard a steam-powered train, or by rented RV. The American River Parkway takes visitors past some of the city's over 100 parks by bicycle, foot, or horseback.

Sacramento's central location in the middle of California also makes the state capital an ideal starting point for RV excursions west to San Francisco or east to Lake Tahoe. Dr. Wilkinson's Hot Springs is a popular place to relax in the heart of the Napa Valley, while Six Flags Discovery Kingdom contains 30 rollercoasters as well as an oceanarium presenting dolphin, walrus, and sea lion shows. RV motorists can travel to a beach, a ski resort, or a Nevada casino within a couple of hours from Sacramento.

Attractions

California's first European settlement, Sutter's Fort, now features farming livestock areas, a bakery, a blacksmith's shop, and staff in period clothing. The 15-room Governor's Mansion was among the first residences in the state to boast indoor plumbing when it was first built in 1877. Camellias, the city flower, grow around the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the Capitol Park near the Sacramento State Capitol Building.

The American and Sacramento rivers intersect near Discovery Park, a popular place to ride horses, boat, fish, or watch music or sporting events. Folsom State Park is centred on a serene artificial lake surrounded by secluded beaches. The state park's bicycle path leads to Old Sacramento, site of several restaurants, shops, and nightclubs.

Two of Sacramento's most family-friendly attractions stand close to each other. Fairytale Town is an amusement park based on classic children's fairytales, while the nearby Sacramento Zoo features a reptile house and an amphitheatre with animal encounter lectures. A good place to cool off from Sacramento's hot summers is Waterworld USA, whose opportunities to get wet include river rapid tube rides, an interactive waterslide, and a five-level Shark Attack attraction.

As the state capital, Sacramento also contains several museums such as the California State Military Museum and the California State Railroad Museum. The Sacramento Bee print shop is situated next to a gold panning site and Native American thatch hut at the Sacramento History Museum. A Chinese herb shop and antique drawers filled with fascinating things are part of the California Museum.

Camping in Sacramento

Sacramento Shade RV Park, as its name suggests, provides a shady tree canopy for the vehicles parked at its location northeast of the city near three major roads.

Canine lovers may choose to stay at the El Camino Mobile Home and RV Park because of its nearby dog park and top security. The nearest light rail stop is just steps away.

Even the most gigantic of big rigs can comfortably fit in the spacious concrete patios at Capitol West RV and Mobile Home Park Mature trees grow throughout this park's well landscaped property.

It takes no more than an hour to reach Napa Valley or 90 minutes to travel to San Francisco or Lake Tahoe from Mark J RV Park, geared towards RV motorists 55 years of age or older.

Driving in Sacramento

The westernmost point of US Route 50 is in Sacramento, which also happens to be the meeting point of Interstates 5 and 80. Sacramento is an easy city to drive in compared to the nearby San Francisco Bay Area, but motorists who venture to more isolated mountain and desert roads should take special precautions. It is forbidden to drive while intoxicated (80 mg/dL) in the state of California.
