With an annual passenger throughput of 35 million, Rome Fiumicino Airport is the busiest air hub in Italy. Fiumicino sits on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast of the country's Lazio Region and is just 25kms from notable attractions such as the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
Getting your own self-drive hire vehicle provides the easiest method of travel after arrival. Renting a motorhome offers that little extra convenience. As there are plenty of campsites in Lazio, drivers can choose one that is near to the particular attractions that they want to visit.
As well as central Rome, popular tourism destinations within easy driving distance are Lake Albano and the Pope's summer residence of Castel Gandolfo as well as the beach at Ostia. Sperlonga is a less busy beach but is a three-hour round trip by road. Sperlonga could be combined with Napoli and Pompeii if using one of the motorhome sites along the coast there.
No visit to Rome is complete without spending a couple of days enjoying its wonderful historic sites. Adriano Temple, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and the Colosseum are all within comfortable walking range of each other in the area south of the Villa Borghese. The latter houses a collection of artworks and is surrounded by classical gardens.
Vatican City is on the opposite side of the River Tiber. The ceiling painted by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel is a highlight of 54 galleries packed with the finest art, sculptures and artefacts in Europe. Another ensemble of museums surrounds Piazza del Campidoglio on Capitoline Hill. The Capitoline Museums are themed on archaeological exhibits and art.
The San Callisto and Via Appia Antica catacombs are just inside Rome's A90 ring-road. Santa Marinella is around 50kms up the coast from Fiumicino Airport. Navigating Rome's ancient streets is a daunting task made easier in recent times by the addition of new dual-carriageways and underpasses. Roman drivers can be forceful and it is probably better to give way if in doubt. The Grande Raccordo Anulare circles Rome and many of Lazio's principal roads and motorways lead out from it. The permitted alcohol level for motorists is 0.05 per cent and driving is on the right side of the road.
