Germany Guide

Germany

Stretching from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in the north to the Alps in the south, Germany may seem vast but in actual fact it only covers 137,847 square miles of land. This make exploring the influential European country fairly easy on your own and a motorhome is an excellent way to take in the many stunning landscapes, from the extensive coastlines in the north to hills and mountains in the south.

Western Germany is famed for its vineyards and bicycle-friendly cities and can easily be explored by hired motorhome. The region is dotted with campgrounds and has plenty of scenic routes, including the German Wine Route and the Middle Rhine, with the best time to visit being the summer months. Central Germany is home to some important historical cities as well as the Thuringian and Hainich Forests and is also a great region to explore on your own.

Northern Germany is a popular summertime destination thanks to its beaches and rolling hills, and a holiday drive along the coastlines is sure to be a truly memorable experience. There is no shortage of facilities here to make it a comfortable region to explore. Southern Germany is where much of the country's famous landscape can be found, making it a tourist hotspot. Popular drives in this region include the Bertha Benz Memorial Route and Romantic Route. This region of Germany can be enjoyed year round, though caution should be taken when driving in the mountains in the winter.

Attractions

One of the most iconic attractions in the country is the fairy tale-like Neuschwanstein Castle. The 19th century palace sits on a hill in southwest Bavaria and was built in honour of composer Richard Wagner. The castle is one of many stopover points along the Romantic Route, as is the medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The centre of the town is encircled by a wall that is untouched, taking you back into time. The wall is two and a half kilometres long and has plenty of gateways and entry points. Even further back in history are the ancient wooden spears in Schoningen, northern Germany.

Germany also has plenty of cultural highlights, though most of these are located within the cities. Berlin is one of the best places to experience German culture, with its lively nightlife scene, street art, street side cafe's and museums. Dusseldorf is the fashion capital of the country and a city that hosts numerous famous events. Then there is Munich, the capital city of Bavaria and home of the famous annual Oktoberfest.

The natural attractions are the main highlights of the country, and these are found in nearly all regions. The north is home to such sites as the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park and Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, while the west hosts the scenic Rhine Valley. Lake Constance, the Black Forest and the Bavarian Alps are all in southern Germany, a region that should not be missed by nature enthusiasts.

Drive Germany

The roads in Germany are excellent and are all toll free. Fuel stations are conveniently dotted along all autobahns and locals drive on the right. City driving is not recommended due to heavy congestion, but driving in the countryside can be extremely rewarding. Motorists should be extra careful on autobahns, as there is no set speed limit and some drivers go fairly fast. There is a zero tolerance policy for drinking and driving for those 21 and younger, while older drivers will have to pay a steep fine.

  • Speed limits inside city limits: 30-50kph.
  • Speed limits on Bundesstraben (national roads): 100kph.
  • Recommended maximum speed limit on Autobahns: 130kph.
  • Help number: 110 (police) and 112 (ambulance)
