Guide to Montreal

Montreal

Montreal is a culturally rich city that is extremely charming. It is made up of 19 boroughs, with Ville-Marie borough being the most appealing to visitors. There is so much to see and do in Montreal both day and night, but it is also very easy to go out on excursions. Mont Tremblant is one of the more popular day trip destinations, while the drive west along the Ottawa River to Montebello is absolutely breath taking. It is also not too far away from Vermont, New York and Maine in the US.

Attractions

There is some impressive historical architecture throughout Montreal, most of which is located in Old Montreal, including the Gothic Notre-Dame Basilica and the Renaissance Revival Bonsecours Market. There is also some iconic 20th-century architecture about, like Place Ville Marie and Olympic Stadium, on Pierre de Coubertin Avenue and the largest stadium in Canada.

Downtown Montreal is a modern area characterised by skyscrapers, universities and shopping. Underneath it all is a network of malls, boutiques, restaurants and passageways known as Underground City. The city's pedestrianised Chinatown is also here, with the Place Sun-Yat-Sen sitting in the middle of all of the gift shops and authentic Chinese restaurants.

Just west of Downtown overlooking the city sits Mount Royal, Montreal's namesake. This 233-metre high hill is home to Mount Royal Park, the city's largest green space and a great place to spend an afternoon. The park has plenty of nooks and crannies that are just waiting to be explored, as well as a couple of pavilions that offer spectacular views of the city.

Further west is the Plateau district, an area filled with beautiful Victorian row houses. It is a great place to walk, shop, eat and drink, and is known for its bohemian aura. There is some impressive graffiti art in the area, as well as the famous public art piece Place Roy that sits at the corner of rue Saint-Andre and rue Roy est.

Camping

Camping Alouette is an award winning RV site that is located just 15 minutes outside of the city. It has 400 sites and facilities include a general store, internet access, a swimming pool, a playground and a golf driving range, among other things.
