Guide to Hobart

Hobart

Tasmania is commonly regarded as one of Australia's last remaining natural frontiers. Much of this small island state is uninhabited, untouched and as a result, irresistibly beautiful. The capital of Tasmania, Hobart, is the most populous city on the island, and stands as one of its three main gateways. From this warm hearted, laid back and historic city, it is remarkably easy to explore the Central Highlands, southwestern forests and west coast by campervan. Sites like Mt Field National Park, the Freycinet Peninsula and the Tasman Peninsula are ideal for Hobart based excursions.

Before leaving the city, there are plenty of things to see and do. From the many grand Victorian and Georgian designed buildings throughout the city to Salamanca Market and Battery Point, Hobart has a range of attractions. Just outside the city, there are several magnificent wineries that demand attention. Tourists can reach these sites in less than an hour when driving.

Attractions

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is the place to visit to find out more about the state's natural and human influenced history. Inside the Carnegie Building lies another cultural icon of Hobart - the Maritime Museum of Tasmania. Believe it or not, but this small state boasts a rich history, much of which is spotlighted within this museum.

For more history, head straight to Battery Point once Hobart's traditional seamen's quarters. Lined through its streets is a host of stunning buildings depicting typical Victorian and Georgian architecture. Just before Battery Point is the town's most famous marketplace, Salamanca Market. It's only open on the weekends, so it is recommended that tourists visit it on Saturday morning.

Looking for unspoilt views of Hobart and eastern Tasmania? Then check out Mount Wellington. From its summit, visitors can witness an inspiring scenic vista of the city. If driving to the top, be wary of local wildlife that frequent the area. Also, just outside Hobart are several wineries, including the nationally-renowned Charles Reuben Estate and Meadowbank Estate. Hobart's cold climate makes for excellent wine growing.

Camping in Hobart

Barilla Holiday Park is situated just outside of Hobart, only a short distance from the airport. It is filled with excellent facilities, from sheltered barbecues to modern bathrooms.

The centrally located Discovery Holiday Parks- Hobart is a renowned camping spot, just a few minute's drive from the downtown area. It contains plenty of welcoming conveniences for a comfortable stay.

Driving in Tasmania

The best way to get around 'Tassie'is via the road and highway network. Motorists can reach almost every corner of the state by road. Highway 1 is the main roadway on the island, as it connects most of the major cities. Even though speed limits are in place, it is best to drive according to the conditions, especially on the winding roads in the more mountainous areas of the state. Motorists should also watch for wildlife as thousands of animals are killed on the roads here each year.

  • Speed limits in the city: 50kph.
  • Speed limits on national roads: 100-110kph.
  • Help number: 000.
