Mangochi was once called Fort Johnson in colonial times, but is now a township in the southern region of Malawi. It is home more than 26,000 people. Mangochi is also the name of the region where the city of the same name is located and the capital of the district as well.

Mangochi is a hub of commerce. It is also a central point for travel. There area roads leading from Mangochi to all areas of Malawi and east to Mozambique. The Shire River borders these two countries. To the west, you can explore the hilly region of Dedza. Heading south on the roads you can reach Zomba or Blantyre. The region is hot in the summer and mild in the winter. It is also located on the Lake Malawi flood plain. The lake (also know as the Lake of the Stars) is the farthest south and also the third largest lake in the Rift Valley system. This lake has an old history, being discovered in 1859. The lake was named by David Livingston, who had also named Blantyre.

Mangochi is a place known for its natural minerals and for its fish. You can view a lot of different species of tropical fish as you swim. The region is home to Fish eagles, the national bird of Malawi. It resembles the American Bald eagle.

What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.
