Opened in the year 1914, the Tokyo Station is one of Japan's main railway stations and has a lot more to it than meets the eye, what with all its several underground tracks.
Located in the Marunouchi business district in Tokyo, near the Ginza commercial district and the Imperial Palace grounds, Tokyo Station is the main terminus and starting point for most of the Japanese Shinkasen lines and is today served by several regional as well as local commuter lines. And although it may seem unusual, this station isn't linked to any of the private railway lines.
Even though Tokyo Station is the main intercity terminus, it is only the second-biggest train station in Tokyo: Shinjuku Station being larger. Since the station is centrally located, it happens to be one of the busiest stations and is accessible by many train and underground lines like the JR Yamanote loop line.
There are two main entrances and exits to the station, namely the Marunouchi and the Yaesu. The Marunouchi side has your typical classic red brick structures, while the Yaesu side is more modern. The red brick building of the Marunouchi side was first constructed in the Meiji Period. Each of these sides has three entrances or exits towards the North, the Center and the South ends. On the left-hand side you have the North entrance situated under a dome roof, and towards the right hand side you have the South entrance also situated under a dome roof. Both these dome structures were severely damaged during the Second World War and were later repaired with flatter slat-style roofs.
What's more, the station also includes a top-notch art gallery, a ritzy hotel and a super hip department store and for those of you who are planning on renting cars, there are many car hire services around the station, making traveling in and around the city extremely convenient.
Traveling in the city can be a very slow and frustrating experience because of heavy traffic congestion. Hiring a car can be a convenient way to travel within the city as well as explore the remoter areas of the country, and there are many excellent car hire services that are in close proximity to the station. Since Japanese drivers tend to be more courteous and disciplined than in most other places, driving here isn't that daunting an experience, so visiting a car hire service is definitely a good option.
