Memanbetsu Airport is a public airport in Ozora town and is one of the busiest airports in Hokkaido, Japan. The airport is operated by the government of Hokkaido and has an elevation of approximately forty one metres or one hundred and thirty five feet.
The length of Memanbetsu Airport's runway is two thousand and five hundred metres or eight thousand two hundred and two feet. Initially the length of the runway was one thousand and two hundred metres but this changed after an extension was commissioned and came to be at the turn of the century. This extension has enabled the airport to handle aircrafts with a wide body such as airbuses. This has meant increased passenger traffic and obviously as a result firms such as car hire and taxi companies have increased in number.
Memanbetsu Airport occupies an area of approximately one hundred and sixty seven hectares. The airport has ample parking service and several car hire companies operate from Memanbetsu Airport.
The airport was built in 1935 and was once forcefully occupied by the armed forces of the United States for six years between 1952 and 1957. Later in 1961 it was put under the control and management of the Hokkaido government.
Airlines flying in and out of the airport include All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Air Do and Hokkaido International Airlines. The routes served from the airport have been growing in number steadily over the years. The route from Memanbetsu to Tokyo and Sapporo were launched over forty years ago in 1963. The Memanbetsu to Fukuoka route saw the light of day in 1992 and for Memanbetsu to Sendai it was in 1995. The Memanbetsu to Sendai route was later suspended in the September of 1999. But in October of that year the Memanbetsu to Hakodate route was launched.
