Yokkaichi has always been known as a market town. Many years ago it was a popular night post for many travelers. Over time this town has developed into a port town. In 1872 workers built port facilities on the town and soon many ships laid anchor there. In 1899 this city became an official international port. The port candles cotton, wool, glass, and heavy equipment. Yokkaichi is the largest city in Mie Prefecture. Chuo-dori Street is a 70 meter wide road that leads up to the JR Yokkaichi Station which is located on the eastside. The camphor tree is a symbol of the city and these trees line this popular street.
There is much to do and see for entertainment in this town. The Big Yokkaichi Festival happens every year on the first weekend of August. This event has been going on since 1964. The Kenka Festival is held on August 14th and 15th and this festival is held to chase away bad spirits and welcome in good ones.
While you are visiting this great town you will want to visit The Port of Yokkaichi. This port is only 13 minutes from the bus station. You should also visit a wonderful teahouse known as Shisuian. The shisuian is known for serving the locally famous Ise tea. This tea is considered a luxury in Yokkaichi. There are also very famous ceramics that you will be able to see in many local shops.
Pollution has been a problem for this city. In 1965 a law was passed to fund pollution relief for many patients that were actually suffering from the pollution. 440 billion yen from private government funds have been given to this town to enforce antipollution policies. Pollution is not as bad as it used to be in this town of Yokkaichi.
